Public holidays matter for pay (penalty rates for those who work, a paid day off for those who normally would), for leave (a public holiday during annual leave is not deducted) and for deadlines that roll to the next business day. They are the national days (New Year’s Day, Australia Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, with substitute days when they fall on a weekend) plus Tasmania’s own days such as the King’s Birthday on Monday 14 June 2027.
Is Easter Saturday a public holiday in Tasmania?
No. In Tasmania, Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays but Easter Saturday is not gazetted statewide in 2027. Check your award for weekend penalty rates instead.
Do I get paid for a public holiday in Tasmania?
Full-time and part-time employees are entitled to a paid day off if a public holiday falls on a day they would normally work, at their base rate for the ordinary hours they would have worked. Employees who work the day usually receive penalty rates under their award or agreement. Casuals are not paid if they do not work. A public holiday during annual leave is not deducted from the leave balance.
