Worked examples

  • $20,000: 2.75% = $550.
  • $35,000: rate 2.75 + 10,000 ÷ 6,666.66 = 4.25%, so $1,487.50.
  • $50,000: rate reaches 6.5%, so $3,250.
  • $60,000: 6.5% = $3,900.

A sliding scale instead of brackets

Western Australia charges vehicle licence duty as a percentage of the dutiable value, and between $25,000 and $50,000 the percentage itself rises with the price so there is no cliff: every extra $1,000 of price between those points adds 0.15 percentage points to the rate. Below $25,000 the rate is a flat 2.75% and above $50,000 a flat 6.5%. Heavy vehicles (over 4.5 tonnes GVM) pay 3% capped at $12,000.

Dutiable value and payment

The value is the price paid or the market value if higher, including GST, luxury car tax, factory options and manufacturer delivery fees, excluding dealer delivery charges, the licence (registration) fee and motor injury insurance. Duty is paid when the vehicle is licensed or transferred: dealers include it in the drive-away price, and for private sales the buyer pays the Department of Transport within 14 days when lodging the transfer. New vehicles bought by a dealer to be used as a demonstrator, and transfers on relationship breakdown or death, can be exempt.

Frequently asked questions

How much is stamp duty on a $30,000 car in WA?

$1,050. Between $25,000 and $50,000 the rate is 2.75% plus (30,000 − 25,000) ÷ 6,666.66 = 3.50%, and 3.5% of $30,000 is $1,050. At $25,000 the duty is $687.50; at $40,000 it is $2,000 (5%).

Is WA car stamp duty the same for new and used cars?

Yes. The rate depends only on the dutiable value, which for a used car is the higher of the price paid and market value. The Department of Transport can ask for a valuation if the price on the transfer form looks below market.

How is the rate between $25,000 and $50,000 worked out?

Take the amount over $25,000, divide it by 6,666.66 and add the result as percentage points to 2.75%, rounding to two decimals. At $35,000 that is 2.75 + 1.50 = 4.25%. The rate then applies to the whole $35,000, giving $1,487.50. At $50,000 the formula lands exactly on 6.5%.

Do electric cars pay stamp duty in WA?

Yes, at the same rates as other light vehicles. WA’s Zero Emission Vehicle rebate ($3,500 for eligible EVs under $70,000) was a separate rebate and closed in May 2025; it did not change the duty.

What is included in the dutiable value in WA?

The amount paid for the vehicle including GST, luxury car tax, factory options and accessories fitted at licensing, and delivery fees set by the manufacturer. Dealer delivery charges, the vehicle licence fee, motor injury insurance, extended warranties, finance charges and aftermarket accessories are excluded. Trade-ins do not reduce the dutiable value: duty is on the full price of the vehicle you are buying.
