What counts as the dutiable value
Duty is charged on the price you paid or the vehicle’s market value, whichever is higher, including GST, accessories and dealer delivery but not registration, CTP insurance or the transfer fee. For a used car bought privately Service NSW uses the price on the transfer form unless it is clearly below market, in which case it uses an industry valuation. Duty is paid when the vehicle is registered or transferred into your name, usually through the dealer or at Service NSW within 14 days of a private purchase.
Exemptions and rebates
Transfers to a spouse, on the death of the owner, and vehicles for DVA pensioners with certain disabilities are exempt. The exemption for electric cars up to $78,000 and the $3,000 rebate ended for vehicles bought from 1 January 2024; EVs now pay the standard rates. Caravans (trailers designed for living accommodation while travelling) are exempt from duty in NSW.
Frequently asked questions
How much is stamp duty on a $30,000 car in NSW?
$900: $3 for every $100 of the $30,000 dutiable value (300 × $3). The same rate applies to every vehicle up to $45,000 and to non-passenger vehicles at any price. Registration, CTP and the transfer fee are separate.
Is stamp duty different for used cars in NSW?
No. New and used vehicles pay the same rates: $3 per $100, or $1,350 plus $5 per $100 over $45,000 for passenger cars. For a private used-car sale the duty is worked out on the sale price shown on the transfer, or market value if that is higher, and paid at Service NSW when you transfer the registration.
What is a passenger vehicle for NSW duty?
Revenue NSW treats sedans, wagons, coupes, convertibles, four-wheel drives with seats and windows, two-wheel-drive panel vans with seats and windows, small buses and motor homes as passenger vehicles, so most cars and SUVs pay the higher rate above $45,000. Motorcycles, buses for more than nine people, hearses and vehicles modified for people with disabilities are excluded from the higher rate and stay on $3 per $100 at any value, which is why an $80,000 motorcycle pays $700 less than an $80,000 SUV.
Do electric cars pay stamp duty in NSW?
Yes. The exemption for electric cars up to $78,000 and the $3,000 rebate ended for vehicles bought from 1 January 2024. An electric passenger car is charged at the same rates as any other passenger car.
When and where is car stamp duty paid in NSW?
When the vehicle is registered or the registration is transferred to you. A dealer includes it in the drive-away price and pays it for you. For a private sale you pay at a Service NSW centre or online within 14 days of purchase, along with the transfer fee; late transfers attract a fee and duty is still payable.
