How we keep AussieCalcs accurate
AussieCalcs exists to give you the right number, fast, and to show how we got it. This page explains where our figures come from, how often we check them, what we don’t do, and how we make money. It’s short because the rules are simple.
Where the numbers come from
Every rate, threshold, cap and formula on this site is taken from the body that sets it:
- Income tax, Medicare levy, HELP repayments, Division 7A, FBT, CGT, super guarantee: the Australian Taxation Office and Treasury
- Stamp duty, transfer duty, motor vehicle duty, land tax: Revenue NSW, the State Revenue Office of Victoria, Queensland Revenue Office, RevenueWA, RevenueSA, the State Revenue Office of Tasmania and the ACT Revenue Office
- Long service leave, redundancy and other entitlements: Fair Work and the relevant state acts
- Lending rules such as serviceability buffers: APRA
We do not take figures from news articles, comparison sites, forums or other calculators. If we can’t find an official source for a number, we don’t publish the calculator.
Every calculator page lists its sources at the bottom, with a link and the date we last checked it. Behind the site is a ledger that records the same thing for every figure in our code. If a figure has no source in that ledger, the site can’t be published. Where a figure has been entered but not yet re-checked against the live official page, the page says so in a visible notice until the check is done.
How often we check
- Every 1 July, when most Australian tax and duty rates change, we re-verify every figure on the site against its source before the new financial year’s rules go live.
- After every federal and state budget, we check for announced changes and flag them on the affected calculators, including changes that are announced but not yet law.
- Every calculator is tested against the official government calculator where one exists, using at least three worked examples. We publish those examples on the page so you can check our answer against theirs.
- The “Last verified” date shown on each page is real. If it’s older than you’d like, that’s a fair reason to double-check the source we link to.
What we show you
Each calculator gives you the answer, then a plain-English sentence restating your inputs, then a full breakdown: every step, threshold and rate used to get there. We’d rather you understood the number than trusted us for it.
Where rules differ by state, financial year or your circumstances (first home buyer or not, held for more than 12 months or not), the calculator asks, and where it can’t know, it says what it has assumed.
What we don’t do
- We don’t give personal financial, tax or legal advice. Our calculators are general information tools. Your situation may involve rules a calculator can’t see, and a registered tax agent, financial adviser or solicitor can.
- We don’t recommend products. We don’t tell you which lender, fund or lease provider to choose.
- We’re not a broker, a lender or an adviser.
- We don’t hide anything behind a sign-up, and we don’t use cookies to track you. Our analytics count visits, not people.
How we make money
AussieCalcs is free. It’s paid for in two ways, and neither changes a calculation:
- Advertising. Some pages carry ads. They never appear above your result or inside the calculator.
- Referral partnerships. On some calculators, beneath the result, you’ll see a link to compare products or talk to a broker. If you use one of those links and take out a product, the partner may pay us. These links are marked as such, we only work with partners we’d use ourselves, and we don’t work with payday, short-term or “no credit check” lenders.
The numbers come first. If we ever had to choose between a partner and a correct figure, the figure wins.
Corrections
If you think a number is wrong, use the “Report a problem” link on any calculator or email hello@aussiecalcs.com.au. We check every report against the source. If we made a mistake, we fix it, note the correction on the page and update the verification date. If the source has changed since we last looked, same thing. If the number was right, we’ll explain why.
