Worked examples
- $45,000 passenger car: 225 × $8.40 = $1,890 (4.2%).
- $80,809 (at the threshold): 405 × $8.40 = $3,402; one dollar more and the whole car is charged at $10.40: $4,212.
- $120,000 passenger car: 600 × $14 = $8,400.
- $45,000 new ute: 225 × $5.40 = $1,215; the same ute used: $1,890.
The rate applies to the whole value
Unlike NSW, Victoria does not use a base amount plus a rate on the excess: the rate for the band applies to every $200 of the value. Crossing a band edge therefore raises the duty on the whole car, which is why $80,810 costs $810 more than $80,809. The first band edge is the ATO luxury car tax threshold for the financial year ($80,809 for 2026–27), so it moves each 1 July; the $100,000 and $150,000 edges are fixed in the Duties Act.
Dutiable value for new and used cars
For a new car the SRO uses the price paid including GST, dealer delivery and accessories fitted before delivery, but not registration and TAC charges. For a used car it is the higher of the price and market value; VicRoads may ask for evidence if the declared price looks low. Green cars are those with combined CO₂ emissions under the level set in the Act (which includes electric and most hybrid cars) and pay the flat $8.40 rate however expensive they are. Primary producers’ passenger cars get the same flat rate.
Frequently asked questions
How much is stamp duty on a $50,000 car in Victoria?
$2,100 for a passenger car: 250 lots of $200 at $8.40. A new ute or van at the same price pays $1,350 (250 × $5.40) and a used one $2,100. Registration, TAC and the transfer fee are on top.
What is the luxury car threshold for Victorian stamp duty?
The ATO luxury car tax threshold for the year, $80,809 for 2026–27. Passenger cars up to that value pay $8.40 per $200; above it the rate steps to $10.40 on the whole value, then $14 above $100,000 and $18 above $150,000. Green cars are exempt from the higher bands.
Do electric cars pay stamp duty in Victoria?
Yes, but at the flat green car rate of $8.40 per $200 regardless of price, because battery electric and low-emission hybrids meet the green car definition. An $85,000 EV therefore pays $3,570 instead of the $4,420 a petrol car of the same price would pay.
Is stamp duty different for used cars in Victoria?
For passenger cars, no: new and used cars use the same bands. For non-passenger vehicles, yes: a new ute, van or motorcycle pays $5.40 per $200 and a used one $8.40 per $200. Used-car duty is worked out on the higher of the price and market value.
When is car stamp duty paid in Victoria?
On registration or transfer. A dealer collects it as part of the drive-away price. For a private purchase you pay it to VicRoads when you lodge the transfer within 14 days of the sale, together with the transfer fee. Transfers between spouses and domestic partners are exempt.
